María Fernanda Ampuero, la escritora de cuentos viscerales
La guayaquileña es una de las mujeres más representativa de la literatura latinoamericana.
María Fernanda Ampuero -Guayaquil, 1976- estudió Literatura para seguir justificando lo único que le gusta hacer en la vida: leer. Sus cuentos, crónicas y columnas de opinión se han publicado en Quimera, FronteraD, Gatopardo, Anfibia, SoHo, Mundo Diners. Vive desde hace 19 años en Madrid, no tiene trabajo fijo ni cotiza a la Seguridad Social.
Su principal vicio es querer lo que no tiene y la palabra que más le llena de esperanza es feminismo. Desde siempre ha escrito sobre este tema y sin tapujos. Varios críticos la han definido como una escritora que lanza dagas afiladas a una sociedad cada día más indiferente.
Una vida de escape
La vida de la guayaquileña María Fernanda Ampuero está marcada por la crisis económica y la emigración. En 2000 escapó de Ecuador asfixiada por la quiebra del sector bancario y se instaló en Argentina. Dos años después, ‘el corralito’ se tragó sus ahorros. En 2005 aterrizó en Madrid y aguantó otra crisis, pero esta vez no desistió. Desde entonces ha vivido en la que considera la tercera ciudad más grande de Ecuador. Cuando mira para atrás, no duda en afirmar que la emigración es lo más fuerte que le pudo pasar.
Ampuero nació hace 48 años en Guayaquil. Hija de una familia de clase media alta, se educó en un colegio de chicos con padres que hacían más dinero en un solo día que la que su padre hizo en toda su vida. Esta mujer de pelo crespo y negro, dientes torcidos y caderas anchas estudió Literatura Latinoamericana en la Universidad de Buenos Aires por su inmenso amor a los libros.
Con El fantasma de Canterville de Oscar Wilde se sintió por primera vez dueña de la palabra y su continente, y experimentó la lectura no obligatoria: el deleite de leer por leer. Descubrió nuevos géneros y se enamoró del cuento a través de Antón Chéjov, Julio Cortázar y Juan Rulfo. A partir de este amor ha creado universos en los que confluyen los sentimientos más carnales: los celos, la envidia, la mezquindad, el miedo, el amor… la pasión. «Me gusta que mis cuentos tengan una aparente simpleza que esconden devastación tras devastación, que ocultan amores difíciles y todo aquello que significa ser humano».
Comenzó repartiendo tarjetas telefónicas en quioscos y su currículum en varios medios de comunicación y revistas de Madrid. Esperó. Las llamadas con ofertas laborales nunca sonaron y la crisis la golpeó. Después de recorrer durante cuatro años los quioscos, llegó el paro. En ese momento lo único que tenía era tiempo, así que decidió abrir un blog y escribir sobre lo que empezaba a azotar al país: los desahucios. La recompensa llegó. Realizó las primeras colaboraciones para la revista mexicana Gatopardo, la argentina Anfibia, la colombiana SoHo, las revistas españolas Quimera y Frontera D y la ecuatoriana Mundo Diners.
En este caminar recopiló decenas de sus crónicas periodísticas y artículos. En 2011 publicó su primer libro, Lo que aprendí en la peluquería. Dos años más tarde engendró su segundo trabajo literario, Permiso de Residencia: 45 historias de migrantes ecuatorianos y latinoamericanos que empezaron una nueva vida.
Mientras escribía historias en su pequeño apartamento en el barrio madrileño de Lavapiés, los directivos del diario ABC la llamaron para ofrecerle el cargo de editora de la sección de cuento de su suplemento cultural, algo que no rechazó.
Es la única ecuatoriana ganadora del premio Hijos de Mary Shelley. En 2017 fue distinguida con el premio Cosecha Eñe por su cuento Nam. En 2018 publicó su primer libro de cuentos, Pelea de Gallos. Trece relatos de ficción que narran la cara oculta y menos amable del hogar: los abusos en las familias, la violencia que afecta a las mujeres, cuestiona el poder del hombre y habla indirectamente de la relación hostil que tuvo con su padre.
Pelea de Gallos se ha convertido en uno de sus libros más vendidos y estudiados por la crudeza de sus páginas. El libro no tiene una dedicatoria escrita. Hay una página en blanco con una nota invisible: «A mi papá muerto, que por fin me entiende».
